BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana State University AgCenter has released a new guide to help homeowners who are considering adding a solar power system explore various options and learn more about this technology.
The 24-page guide, which is available as a PDF file online only, provides information about solar power benefits, limitations, technology options, installation and financial considerations. It was written by AgCenter extension housing specialist Claudette Reichel with input from 18 experts from around the country.
“Solar power technology has advanced, lowering the cost and increasing efficiency, but it is still an expensive long-term investment that should be carefully evaluated,” Reichel said. “Because of the benefits of clean, renewable energy, there are an array of federal and local incentives and financing structures to make it more affordable. There is a lot to consider to make a good choice.
“Consumers can get the most out of going solar by becoming familiar with their options and knowing what questions to ask. It is important to ensure a strong contract, quality installation and good return on investment to achieve benefits they seek,” Reichel said.
The guide features a list of seven basic steps to going solar, 40 questions to ask when considering a home solar power system, a leasing vs. buying calculation worksheet, diagrams, photos and sources of additional information. It can be viewed online and downloaded for free at www.lsuagcenter.com/solarpub.
