GONZALES, La. – The Lamar Dixon Expo Center is full of activity as the 80th annual LSU AgCenter Livestock Show kicks into high gear. The show runs from Saturday, Feb. 14 to Saturday, Feb. 21, when it will culminate with an awards ceremony.
Louisiana 4-H and FFA members advance to the statewide Livestock Show after placing in parish and district shows held in the first few weeks of the year. While they’re not exhibiting, contestants keep busy grooming, feeding and entertaining their animals, which range from pigs and chickens to cows and goats.
About 2,000 exhibitors participate in the show, which also draws crowds of spectators.
Young people learn important lessons by participating in the Livestock Show. Even if they don’t win an award, by the time the show ends, they’ve gained valuable skills in leadership, responsibility and caring for animals.
