White-tailed deer, feral hogs to be discussed at wildlife field day

News Release Distributed 03/05/12

The LSU AgCenter’s Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will hold a wildlife field day on March 17.

The event will focus on the management of white-tailed deer and feral hog populations, according to Don Reed, LSU AgCenter forestry specialist at the station.

“We will be looking at deer browse preference and availability, professional approaches to controlling feral hogs in the Southeast and management implications pertaining to Mississippi’s statewide mandatory antler restrictions,” Reed said.

In addition to these topics, there will be an update on the wildlife research at the Bob R. Jones Wildlife Research Institute.

The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a welcome and introductions by Dearl Sanders, resident coordinator at the station, followed by Lane Foil, chair of the Bob R. Jones Wildlife Research Institute with updates on wildlife research.

The program will end at noon with a lunch provided in the registration fee. Preregistration is $30, if paid by March 15. Registration fees paid on the day of the program will be $40. Checks should be made payable to QMDA.

Further information about the field day is available from Reed at 225-683-5848.

The field day is cosponsored by the LSU AgCenter’s Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station, Quality Deer Management Association, South Louisiana Branch and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Directions for Baton Rouge: Take La. Highway 67 (Plank Rd.) 25 miles north toward Clinton, take right on Idlewild Rd, then two miles to entrance of the station on the left.
