Smooth cordgrass variety field day scheduled for April 24 in Baton Rouge

A field day for wetland plant producers, agencies and private companies that specify smooth cordgrass in restoration projects throughout Louisiana is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24 at the LSU AgCenter Burden Center in Baton Rouge.

The smooth cordgrass variety field day will present performance data on three varieties developed by LSU AgCenter scientists.

LSU AgCenter coastal plants breeder Carrie Knott will present performance data followed by a discussion on the deployment, significance and application of three varieties.

There also will be a smooth cordgrass certification, including an overview and discussion, by Lester Cannon, assistant director of seed programs, Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

Additional topics will include discussions of the significance and application of smooth cordgrass varieties, smooth cordgrass certification program and container production options.

The field day will conclude with a visit to the smooth cordgrass nursery. Registration is required no later than April 18. Lunch will be provided.
