The LSU AgCenter is releasing the latest of its helpful resources for Louisiana gardening enthusiasts – the 2012 Get It Growing Lawn and Garden Calendar.

The Get It Growing calendar is packed with photos, gardening hints and monthly tips from LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dan Gill that are specifically written for Louisiana’s growing conditions and climate.

It is part of an overall educational effort from the LSU AgCenter that’s designed to help Louisiana residents learn more about caring for their lawns, landscapes and gardens.

“Each year, the Get It Growing calendar highlights Louisiana flowers, vegetables, plants and gardens with easy-to-understand gardening tips, useful information and beautiful photos from Louisiana photographers,” said Elma Sue McCallum of LSU AgCenter Communications, who coordinates production of the calendar. “Anyone who enjoys gardening will find the calendar is a great resource for expanding his or her knowledge.”

In addition to monthly tips and beautiful photos, the full-color, 32-page calendar features a special section on soil testing, information about Louisiana Super Plants and an illustrated how-to guide about taking a soil sample. A list of other helpful LSU AgCenter lawn and garden publications also is included to assist novice or expert gardeners learn even more about gardening.

Photographs for the calendar are chosen each year through a call for entries and competition that begins in the fall for the edition to be published the following year. The 2012 calendar winners, whose photos are included in this year’s edition, include Robert Anderson from New Orleans; Glenda Balliviero, Lafayette; Norman Balliviero, Lafayette; Krista Cole, Alexandria; Marcie Cutrer, Denham Springs; Russell Fresh, Harahan; Harry Gabriel, Ponchatoula; Amy Graham, Jefferson; Kerry Griechen, Lafayette; Sherie Hardaway, Berwick; Curtis Hilbun, Wisner; Catherine Lorio, Oscar; Reachel Mayeur, Harahan; Meg McNutt, Chalmette; Marsha Melancon, Houma; Gayle Miller, Hammond; Sara Orton, New Orleans; Rose Anne St. Romain, Mansura; and Maureen Theriot, Harvey.

The 9-by-13.25-inch calendar, which is designed as part of the LSU AgCenter’s popular Get It Growing educational campaign on home lawns and gardens, sells for $11.95 and is available for online orders at www.LSUAgCenter.com/OnlineStore. Sample photos and more information also are available through that website. In addition, phone orders can be placed by calling 225-578-4161.

The calendar also is expected to be available through a variety of bookstores, garden centers and gift shops across the state this fall.
