LSU AgCenter faculty member receives national award

Donald L. Thompson, a professor in the LSU AgCenter School of Animal Sciences, was presented the Equine Science Award on July 11 during the joint annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association and the American Society of Animal Science held in New Orleans.

The Equine Science Award is given jointly by the Equine Science Society and the American Society of Animal Science to a qualified individual who is a member of both organizations.

Thompson was recognized for his outstanding research achievements and contributions to the equine industry.

A member of the faculty in the LSU AgCenter since 1980, he has received numerous awards during his career, including the Young Animal Scientist Award from the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science, three awards from the LSU AgCenter, a team research award for efforts in chromium research in the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station and the Equine Science Society Distinguished Service Award.

A native of New Jersey, Thompson received is bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Colorado State University.
