WEST MONROE, La. – Results from the 42nd annual Louisiana 4-H and FFA State Horse Show held July 5-9 have been released.

Coordinated by the LSU AgCenter, the event was held at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center.

“The horse program takes a lot of training and a lot of work,” LSU AgCenter Associate Vice Chancellor Dwight Landreneau told the participants. “We teach you leadership, citizenship and sportsmanship. I hope you will take what you learn here to better your community.”

State Rep. Sam Little, of Bastrop, encouraged parents to spend time with their children. “4-H will make them produce results,” he said.

John Barnett, LSU AgCenter Northeast Region director, congratulated everyone, not just youth with ribbons. “Everyone is a winner who comes to these events,” he said.

Premier Exhibitor awards sponsored by the Gerry Lane Foundation are given to participants who display a true knowledge of the horse program. Each exhibitor is tested on skills and knowledge of horses through an exam, interview and resume process.

The 2011 Horse Premier Exhibitor was Kealy Stelly, of Lafayette Parish, who received a $1,000 savings bond and a Premier Exhibitor jacket and belt buckle.

Second place went to Jacob Stelly, St. Landry Parish; third, Alex Varisco, St. Tammany Parish; fourth, Kate Short, Point Coupee Parish; fifth, Katelyn Spears, St. Landry Parish.

The Louisiana 4-H Foundation presented a $500 scholarship savings bond to the all-around high point winner in timed events in the 13 years and under group – Lani Trahan of Vermilion Parish.

Another $500 scholarship savings bond, presented by John Deere, was awarded to the all-around high point winner in timed events in the 14 years and older group – Logan Poole of Ouachita Parish.

Two additional awards were presented at the conclusion of judged events. The first, presented by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, was given to Frances Foster of Ouachita Parish as the high point all-around junior. The second, presented by the Louisiana Equine Council, was awarded to Morgan Bertrand of Calcasieu Parish as the high point all-around senior.

The Leader of the Year Award was presented to Joel Guidry, of Lafayette Parish, who has been a Master Horseman for seven years and a horse leader for 10 years.

Guidry has spent many hours annually promoting the life skills gained through members participating in the development of horse judging, horse quiz bowl and premier exhibitor contests.

He has provided leadership in his parish’s annual horse sponsorship campaign that helps raise $4,500 annually to provide awards to the top four in each class. He has successfully recruited parent volunteers to become involved in the 4-H Horse Project.
