East Baton Rouge Master Gardener plant sale set for May 7

News Release Distributed 04/18/11

If mom's a gardener or just likes flowering plants, you can shop for her at the Master Gardeners' Mother’s Day plant sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 at the LSU AgCenter Burden Center.

Master Gardeners have been working all year to provide the public with more than 150 varieties of plants, said Master Gardener Donna Montgomery. They’ll be selling colorful dwarf crape myrtles, abutilons, angel trumpets, purple cone flowers, salvias, dwarf pomegranates, superbells, butterfly bushes, pawpaw and mayhaw trees, ornamental grasses, a variety of vines, easy-care roses, herbs and succulents in specially made hypertufa pots.

In addition to the large variety of plants, Master Gardeners will be available to help make selections and give advice on planting. And experts will be available in a plant health clinic to help diagnose problems with sickly plants.

“In addition, there will be children’s gardening activities,” Montgomery said. “It’s never too early to introduce gardening to your children and grandchildren.”

The East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners use proceeds from the Mother’s Day plant sale to support community educational activities such as plant health clinics, establishing home gardens for Habitat for Humanity, educational classes at local libraries and children’s programs, Montgomery said.

Purchases can be paid for by cash or check; credit cards will not be accepted.

Burden Center is on Essen Lane off I-10 in Baton Rouge. For more information, call the Burden Center at 225-763-3990.
