News Release Distributed 04/06/10
The Bonne Terre Garden Fair will be held May 1 at the Terrebonne Association of Retarded Citizens (TARC) facility at No. 1 McCord Road at the Houma Airbase from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show will provide an opportunity to hear horticulture and gardening experts, including LSU AgCenter horticulturist Dan Gill and visit vendors with gardening products. Local Master Gardeners will conduct their annual plant sale.
Barton Joffrion, LSU AgCenter county agent, said people who attend the garden fair can learn from expert speakers about gardening practices and purchase plants, lawn and garden supplies. Children will be able to participate on a variety of hands-on activities.
“This is the fifth annual celebration,” he said.
Presentations will include:
– An introduction to the art of bonsai by Jim Osborne of the New Orleans Bonsai Society.
– Historic Windrush Gardens and its special plants by Peggy Cox, curator of Windrush Gardens at the LSU AgCenter’s Burden Center in Baton Rouge.
– Bizarre and beautiful bromeliads by Michael Sea of Funny Farm Nursery.
– Dan answers all of your questions by Dan Gill, LSU AgCenter horticulturist.
In addition, La Terre Master Gardeners will be presenting garden-related topics ranging from square-foot gardening to composting.
Joffrion said the event will include a garden-themed art show, an Ask the Experts table and a tour of the TARC garden. Visitors may bring soil samples for testing by the LSU AgCenter for $7 per sample.
Admission is $4 at the gate or $2 in advance from LSU AgCenter offices in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes; children under 12 enter free.
