POLLOCK, La. – Since the 1920s the LSU AgCenter Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center has been the scene of fun-filled summer days for many generations of Louisiana youth. But what happens in the off season?
“The possibilities are endless,” said camp coordinator Ashley Powell. “Our 80-acre facility is a great place to host events that target audiences of all ages such as birthday parties, family reunions, field trips, retreats, conferences, meetings, day camps and weddings.”
Grant Walker will host an open house from 5:30-8 p.m. on September 24 with food and live music. The general public is welcome and encouraged to come and see all the amenities Grant Walker has to offer.
“We offer a variety of options that create an environment conducive to your event and at a reasonable cost,” Powell said.
“We want the community to take advantage of the facility, particularly educators and businesses, for professional development and educational programs,” she said. “Our day camps offer teachers an alternative to traditional field trips.”
Day camps are built around the experiential learning model and correspond to state standards or a life skill, Powell said. Camps are offered to students from grades four to six. The WindyWoods building creates a great hands-on learning environment with its three classrooms and wet lab equipped with two sinks, a whiteboard and a recycling station.
Powell said organizations and businesses can use the education building, which is equipped with three classrooms and a computer lab. The multipurpose building, which accommodates up to 300 people, features a large meeting hall to host conferences or retreats.
Additional facilities include an arts-and-crafts building, dramatic arts theater and two dance pavilions.
Lodging options for overnight events available for rent include 11 bunkhouse cabins and four log cabins. Each bunkhouse has 48 bunk bed-style beds and four twin beds along with two large bathhouses.
Three log cabins sleep between six and eight people, and two include a kitchenette. One larger cabin perfect for a couple’s getaway includes a full kitchen, large bath, and a washer and dryer
Outdoor facilities include a swimming pool, archery range, shooting range, campsites, challenge ropes course, canoes and paddle boards.
Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center is located near Pollock on Highway 8 about 15 miles northeast of Alexandria. For reservations and availability, contact Powell or Christine Bergeron at 318-765-7209.
