La. 4-H’ers compete at National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference

BATON ROUGE, La. – Several Louisiana 4-H students placed in contests held during the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, on Nov. 18 and 19.

All of the 4-H’ers who placed had previously won Louisiana contests, said Theresia Lavergne, LSU AgCenter poultry specialist.

Matthew Landry, Ascension Parish 4-H’er, took second place in the National 4-H Chicken Barbecue Contest, in which contestants gave a presentation and were judged based on barbecue techniques and sensory evaluation of the finished product.

Landry won a gold pin and a $200 cash award. His coaches were Stephanie Gravois, 4-H agent in Ascension Parish, and Hannah Landry, a volunteer 4-H leader in Ascension Parish.

The Louisiana 4-H Poultry Judging Team placed second in market egg grading, third in egg production judging and fourth in the overall National 4-H Poultry Judging Contest.

St. Landry Parish 4-H’er Courtney Bernard was the third high individual in market egg grading, fourth high individual in egg production judging and the ninth high individual in the overall judging contest. She won a silver pin and a $50 cash award.

Madison Primeaux, Vermilion Parish 4-H’er, was the 20th high individual in the overall contest, winning a bronze pin and a $25 cash award. Brett Landry, Jefferson Davis Parish 4-H’er, was the fourth high individual in the market egg grading.

The other team member was Micha Taylor from St. Landry Parish. The team was coached by volunteer 4-H leaders Wayne Oubre, of St. Landry Parish, and Aaron Rasberry, of Jefferson Davis Parish.

Gabie Davis placed seventh in the National 4-H Egg Preparation Demonstration Contest. She was judged on her presentation skills and the dish she prepared, baked spinach quiche in ham cups. She won a bronze pin and a $50 cash award. She was coached by Jill Davis, a volunteer 4-H leader in Terrebonne Parish.

The Louisiana 4-H Avian Bowl team placed seventh in the National 4-H Avian Bowl Contest. The team included Livingston Parish 4-H’ers Luke Seguin, Matthew Seguin, Colton Smith and Haley Williams. Their coach was Livingston Parish 4-H agent Jessie Hoover.

The conference was held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition.

The trip was funded by the Louisiana Poultry Federation and the Louisiana Egg Commission.
