Gomphrena/Globe Amaranth – Ornamental Plant of the Week for May 18, 2015

Gardeners should consider some of the new gomphrena varieties – globe amaranth – for their landscapes.

One new variety is Fireworks. Unlike older gomphrenas, Fireworks is very tall (3-4 feet) and has pink flowers with light sprinkles of purple.

Traditional gomphrenas, which we sometimes commonly called bachelor buttons and some people call globe amaranth, are an old garden standby. They have light purple, lavender, white, dark purple and pink flowers on plants that can be from 6 inches to 4 feet tall depending on the variety. Select the Audray, All Around or Las Vegas series if you prefer these smaller-growing varieties.

Gomphrenas do best in full sun with limited irrigation.
