Sugarcane field day July 15 at AgCenter Sugar Station

ST. GABRIEL, La. – The LSU AgCenter Sugar Research Station will host its 33rd Annual Sugarcane Field Day on July 15.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the station, with field tours beginning at 9 a.m. An indoor program begins at 11 a.m. with lunch at noon.

Topics to be covered during the field tours include sugarcane variety development, sugarcane insect pest management, a discussion of 8-foot rows, billet planting, nitrogen loss in sugarcane production and sugarcane weed control.

Speakers for the indoor program include Bill Richardson, LSU vice president for agriculture and dean of the College of Agriculture; Rogers Leonard, LSU AgCenter associate vice chancellor for plant and soil programs; Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry; Jim Simon, general manager for the American Sugar Cane League; and Glen Gentry, interim resident coordinator for the LSU AgCenter Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station, who will discuss managing feral hogs.
