Fruit, vegetable field day set for July 1

BATON ROUGE, La. – Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in the industry are invited to the Louisiana Fruit and Vegetable Grower meeting and field day from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at LSU AgCenter Botanical Gardens at Burden on July 1.

The event will provide updates from Creole tomato and summer squash variety trials and the garlic variety demonstration, said LSU AgCenter vegetable specialist Kiki Fontenot.

Topics on the agenda include bitter rot in apples and brown rot in peaches, a fresh produce sanitation demonstration and the Louisiana Fruit and Vegetable Growers membership meeting.

The day will end with a field tour of tomato, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, the All-America Selections Garden and fig plots.

The field day is open to LFVGA members, producers, LSU AgCenter agents and industry professionals, said Fontenot.

The Burden botanical gardens are located at 4560 Essen Lane, just off Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge.
