Louisiana 4-H’ers Compete at Poultry and Egg Conference

BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana 4-H’ers from across the state brought home awards from the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 19-20, said LSU AgCenter poultry specialist Theresia Lavergne.

Kari Louise Davis, a Calcasieu Parish 4-H’er, took second place in the national 4-H egg preparation demonstration contest. Davis was judged on her presentation skills and on the dish she prepared – egg yolk road ice cream. She won a gold pin and a $200 cash award. She was coached by Sherri Davis, a Calcasieu Parish 4-H volunteer, Lavergne said.

Leneigh Hennigan from Natchitoches Parish placed sixth in the national 4-H turkey barbecue contest. Hennigan was judged on her barbecue techniques, the sensory evaluation of the finished barbecue and on her presentation skills, in which she gave an illustrated talk on turkeys.

She won a bronze pin and a $75 cash award. Hennigan was coached by Gwen Fontenot, a Natchitoches Parish 4-H agent, and Kim Hennigan, a Natchitoches Parish 4-H volunteer.

The Louisiana 4-H poultry judging team placed fourth in the egg production judging section of the contest, and sixth in the overall contest. Jon Boudreaux from St. Martin Parish was the third highest individual in egg production judging and the seventh highest individual in the overall judging contest.

Jon won a silver pin and a $100 cash award. The other team members were Katelyn Bellelo, Peyton Higginbotham and TaMyra Ransom, all from Pointe Coupee Parish. The team was coached by Mark Carriere, a Pointe Coupee Parish 4-H agent.

The Louisiana 4-H avian bowl team placed seventh in the national 4-H avian bowl contest. The team members included Cade Bertrand, Marcus Broussard and Bret Lee, all from Vermilion Parish. The team was coached by Hilton Waits, a Vermilion Parish 4-H agent.

Gabie Davis placed ninth in the national 4-H chicken barbecue contest. Davis was judged on her barbecue techniques, the sensory evaluation of the finished barbecue and on her presentation skills which entailed giving an illustrated talk on poultry. Davis was coached by Jill Davis, a Terrebonne Parish volunteer.

The National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference was held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition, Lavergne said.
