Varieties of Prunus mume – Japanese flowering apricot – have potential in Louisiana. Peggy Clark, Kobai and Fragrant Cloud are some of the recommended varieties.
Flower colors can vary in shades of red, pink and white. Trees have characteristics of apricots and plums. They bloom in late January to mid-February in Louisiana around the time of other mid- to late-winter flowering trees, such as oriental magnolias and flowering cherries.
