Sugarcane field day scheduled for July 18

The LSU AgCenter’s 30th Annual Sugarcane Field Day will be held July 18 at the Sugar Research Station near St. Gabriel, beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m.

Field tours beginning at 9 a.m. will feature reports from LSU AgCenter scientists on their current research, which will include:

– Sugarcane variety development.

– Benefits of basic sugarcane breeding programs.

– Improvements in mechanical sugarcane planters.

– Brown rust disease management.

– Weeds and weed control.

Guest speakers following the field tour will include Dr. Mike Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, and a representative from American Sugar Cane League. In addition, the program will feature a video highlighting the history and future of sugarcane research in Louisiana.

The Sugar Research Station is on La. Highway 30, 11 miles south of Tiger Stadium on the LSU campus, or nine miles north of Gonzales.
