LSU AgCenter sets programs for Ag Expo

News Release Distributed 12/21/12

WEST MONROE, La. – The LSU AgCenter will conduct several educational programs during the 2013 Ag Expo scheduled for Jan. 18-19 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center.

Presentations will Include:

– Beef cattle production at the “Cattlemen’s College,” in conjunction with the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association meeting, at 2 p.m., on Jan 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn.

– Agritourism featuring horses at 8 a.m. on Jan. 18 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center.

– Forestry forum at 8 a.m. on Jan. 19 at the West Monroe Convention Center.

– Master Gardener event at 8 a.m. on Jan. 19 at the West Monroe Convention Center.

In addition, the LSU AgCenter will again present Ag Alley at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center to introduce the public to agriculture, with exhibits on soybeans, rice, cotton, sweet potatoes and beef cattle.

Ag Alley also includes a mini farm to teach children about agriculture. The mini farm will be open for school children on Jan. 16-17.

Last year, more than 1,500 fourth- and eighth- graders went through the mini farm that includes various farm animals such as goats, cattle, pigs, chicks, dairy cattle and beef cattle.

Jason Holmes, LSU AgCenter regional livestock specialist, said the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association holds its annual convention along side the expo, and the pairing has increased attendance.

“That’s drawing a different crowd to the event, but the expo’s emphasis is still on row crops,” Holmes said.

The Ike Hamilton Expo Center is located at 501 Mane St. in West Monroe. The event will be open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 18, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 19.

Adult admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Children under 12 are admitted free.
