Children’s programs scheduled at 4-H Museum in Mansura

News Release Distributed 11/02/11

MANSURA, La. – The Louisiana 4-H Museum is offering “Discovery Days,” an educational program series for groups of children ages 3-8.

The program theme will change monthly.

Rose Anne St. Romain, museum director and program presenter, draws on her experience as a librarian and storyteller to present the programs to explore the connection between nature, nutrition and healthy lifestyles in a fun and interactive way.

“We embrace the 4-H slogan ‘Learn by Doing’ with games, participation stories and activities that challenge students’ prediction skills and engage their senses in discovering answers to questions,” St. Romain said.

The program will include hands-on activities, multi-sensory experiences, stories and information along with songs and action rhymes.

The November program focuses on “A Grain of Wheat,” and children will learn about wheat and the products made from the crop, St. Romain said.

“Children will participate and not just listen,” she said. “For this month’s program about wheat, after learning about different types of bread and bread products, they are going to help me make waffles.”

The December program will be “Life in a Forest.” St. Romain said she wants to help children learn to identify harmful and beneficial plants and animals.

Thus far, 21 sessions have been scheduled, she said.

Programs are open to no more than 40 children per session and can be scheduled for a date and time convenient to each group. For very young children, St. Romain recommends groups of about 20. Participation is not limited to Avoyelles Parish where the museum is located in Mansura.

Registration is required at least two weeks before a selected program date so supplies can be purchased.

Cost is $1 per child payable by check or money order to Louisiana 4-H Foundation.

Programs will be held in the Louisiana 4-H Museum at 8592 Highway 1, Mansura, La.

Monthly themes are:

– November 2011: A Grain of Wheat.
