The Louisiana Equine Council is hosting its 5th Annual Horse Expo March 19-20 at the Burton Coliseum Outdoor Arena in Lake Charles.
“This year’s event will focus on activities related to stock horses, but it will provide useful and relevant demonstrations for all horse owners,” said Howard Cormier, LSU AgCenter equine specialist.
In the colt starting competition, three trainers will be assigned an unbroken colt, provided by the Gray Ranch of Vinton, to train and ride in four hours.
Lake Charles resident Maurice Tynes, a professional cutting horse trainer will demonstrate how to effectively start young horses on cattle.
Fran Hancock of Lake Charles, a nationally recognized clinician for Reis Ranch Natural Horsemanship, will demonstrate a dressage performance with instructors from the local equestrian center Le Bocage.
There will be a stock dog demonstration by William Hetzel, and a performance by the Greenwell Springs Drill Team.
The SOAR Therapeutic Riding facility will host a Kid’s Korral providing education information, crafts and stick horse races.
The public is invited to bring their horses to participate in a team sorting competition Saturday night (March 19). A demonstration will take place earlier in the day for individuals new to the sport, and riders of all skill levels are encouraged to compete for trophy buckles and payback allowances.
Also, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry will be on hand Saturday afternoon to install electronic identification chips in their saddles for a small fee.
