POLLOCK, La – Ask any geologist, and they will tell you their job rocks.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation’s geologists feel the same way. Their passion for geology, coupled with a companywide education program, created the This School Rocks interactive presentation, which introduces geology and mineral development to students from elementary to high school.

Featuring experiments, videos and rock samples, This School Rocks was on the program at the LSU AgCenter’s Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center for three weeks in July. Representatives from Chesapeake traveled to the camp and taught campers about the natural gas and oil industry.

This year’s camp theme of “Step into Fun with 4-H” was evident as more than 180 campers between 9 and 12 years old stepped into the world of geology. They were exposed to the concepts of porosity and permeability, held examples of all three rock groups and saw first-hand the principles of mineral development.

Eleven-year-old Remy Winners said she enjoyed the presentation.

“I thought it was neat learning about different rocks,” she said. “The experiments were cool, and now I know how Chesapeake gets all its natural gas.”

Since beginning operations in the Haynesville Shale of northwest Louisiana and East Texas in 2008, Chesapeake Energy has been a partner with 4-H through the company’s Discovering Tomorrow’s Leaders contest, scholarships for underprivileged children to attend Camp Grant Walker and This School Rocks.

“After Chesapeake started donating funds for 4-H camp scholarships, their staff visited 4-H camp and was instantly impressed,” said Eric Eskew, executive director of the Louisiana 4-H Foundation. “The fact that our 4-H staff does such a great job with these kids is a testament to Chesapeake’s added support through the This School Rocks program.”

“We are especially pleased to continue our partnership with 4-H and Camp Grant Walker,” said Paul Pratt, Chesapeake’s director of corporate development. “They do a remarkable job offering children throughout the state a multifaceted educational experience in a traditional summer camp setting.”

An educational program of the LSU AgCenter, 4-H summer camp each summer hosts approximately 4,000 children in fourth through sixth grades from all 64 Louisiana parishes.
