Finley named American Chemical Society Fellow

News Release Distributed 08/23/11

John W. Finley, head of the LSU AgCenter Department of Food Science, has been named a fellow of the American Chemical Society.

The honor is in recognition of demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and important contributions to American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.

Finley will be recognized at an induction ceremony on Aug. 29 during the Society’s 242nd National Meeting & Exposition in Denver.

Finley has been a member of the ACS since 1964, when his career was beginning and a mentor advised him to join and become active in the organization, and he did.

He served on the American Chemical Society Council for 12 years and was associate editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Finley was nominated by the Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, which he described as an active, medium-sized division within the society.

“Agricultural and food chemistry are applied activities that relate to people,” Finley said.

In addition to receiving the award, Finley will be presenting three papers at the Denver meeting.

One on the health benefits of polyphenolic compounds will be presented with two members of the LSU AgCenter Department of Food Science – Jack Losso and Zhimin Xu.

The second will deal with the distinction of plants for food and other crops that can be grown for fuel in areas where food is difficult to grow.

His final paper will feature a nutrition study on energy balance and nutritional intervention studies on a Mt. Everest expedition.

The ACS Fellows Program was created by the ACS in 2008 “to recognize members of ACS for outstanding achievements in and contributions to Science, the Profession, and the Society.”
