A weed is just a plant that’s out of place.
Weed control is possible with the right herbicide applied at the right time, LSU AgCenter agent Chuck Griffin said at the LSU AgCenter’s Lunch and Ag Discovery session Aug. 31 at the Red River Research Station in Bossier City.
“The most important thing in a lawn is to make it grow vigorous,” Griffin said. “It is essential to prevent weeds.”
Weeds are caused by low fertilization, compacted soil, poor drainage and improper mowing, he said. Griffin encouraged getting soil tested through the LSU AgCenter.
Pre-emergence herbicides can be used in almost every yard before weeds come out of the ground. “If weeds already are up, pre-emergence is not going to do any good,” Griffin said.
Pre-emergent herbicides are usually more friendly to bushes and flowers, he added.
“More is not better with herbicides,” Griffin said. “Put down what’s needed.
“Herbicides are very safe as long as you use them as directed,” he said. “Store them where kids and pets won’t get to it. Store them in a dry area protected from freezing temperatures.”
