GRAND CANE, La. – Approximately 600 4-H’ers tested their skills, decision making and endurance on the shooting range May 7-9 at the state shooting sports competition.
Shotgun – including trap, skeet and five-stand – and hunting skills events were held at the Shreveport Gun Club May 7.
Hunting skills includes tests of hunting rules and regulations, wildlife identification consisting of furs, feet and feathers, and orienteering along with archery and shooting skills in various disciplines.
Modified-trap shotgun, air pistol, archery, muzzle loading, smallbore pistol, smallbore rifle and BB gun competitions were held at the Long-Range Alley Gun Club in Grand Cane May 8-9.
The top four youth in the several senior categories are eligible to compete in the national competition in Kerrville, Texas, June 28-July 3. The categories include senior air pistol, archery nationals, rifle nationals, senior muzzle loading, shotgun, senior hunting skills, smallbore pistol and archery recurve.
The top finishers in each category and their parishes were:
Hunting Skills Senior – Morgan Smith, Calcasieu; Peter Ashley, DeSoto; Josh Scott, Tangipahoa; Brendan Trahan, Cameron.
