News Release Distributed 06/09/10
During the week of June 22-24, more than 1,500 4-H’ers from across the state will descend upon the LSU campus in Baton Rouge to compete for awards, scholarships, U.S. savings bonds and educational trips.
It’s called 4-H University, and it’s the culmination of another year in the LSU AgCenter 4-H program, according to Mark Tassin, state leader.
“For some students, this week marks the end of a year’s worth of preparation. Students have spent many hours rehearsing their presentations and honing their contest skills. It creates a competitive atmosphere, but it also leads to a lot of fun for the students,” Tassin said.
2010 is the 96th year of the event. Contests represent a wide variety of skill sets that the students must master. A total of 39 contests will be held in categories including photography, diesel equipment, fashion and forestry.
4-H U, as it’s called, will not only include competition but offers sessions on essential life skills.
“We will have educational programs focusing on topics such as Internet safety, money management and the dangers of using cell phones while driving. All of these areas are part of these students’ everyday lives,” said Terril Faul, 4-H U coordinator.
