Washington Parish Dairy Day to be held at Duncan farm

News Release Distributed 05/16/14

FRANKLINTON, La. – The Washington Parish Dairy Advisory Council and the LSU AgCenter will hold the 55th Annual Washington Parish Dairy Day June 4 at the Duncan Acres Dairy Farm near Hackley, Louisiana.

Brent and Laurie Duncan, hosts for the Dairy Day, recently completed a unique 48-cow rotary milking parlor for their nearly 500 organic milk cows, said LSU AgCenter agent Lacey Keating.

Other innovative features at the Duncan Dairy include compost-bedded feeding barns, self-cleaning cow brushes and a rapid milk-cooling system.

“The program will begin at 10 a.m. with registration, followed by an introduction from Russell Creel, chair of the Washington Parish Dairy Advisory Committee,” Keating said. “A short presentation on the steps required to build the rotary parlor will be followed by an award ceremony honoring those receiving 4-H, milk quality and milk production awards.”

After lunch, a milking demonstration will be provided for those who wish to see the rotary parlor in action.

The Duncans not only welcome Washington Parish dairy families and industry representatives but those in surrounding parishes and counties as well, Keating said.

For more information, contact Keating at the LSU AgCenter Washington Parish Office at 985-839-7855 or LSU AgCenter dairy specialist Charlie Hutchison at 985-839-2322.
