Wildlife field day to be held May 3

News Release Distributed 04/15/14

CLINTON, La. – The LSU AgCenter Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will hold a wildlife field day on May 3.

This year’s event will focus on the management of white-tailed deer and what’s on the horizon for controlling feral hogs and other nuisance animals, according to Don Reed, LSU AgCenter forestry and wildlife specialist at the station.

“Presentations will cover a variety of topics including discussions on a new genetics trial established specifically for wildlife,” Reed said.

The identification and nutritional value of understory browse plants for deer also will be covered.

Experts will explain deer aging using tooth wear and replacement along with antler scoring, Reed said.

Also of interest to hunters will be a report on the 2013-14 deer season in Louisiana by Scott Durham, deer study leader with Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The program will begin at 8 a.m. with a welcome and introductions by Dearl Sanders, resident coordinator at the station, and end at noon with a lunch. Preregistration is $30 if paid by April 25 or $40 after this date. Checks should be made payable to Quality Deer Management Association and mailed to Tammy Bosch at 10114 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

Further information about the field day is available from Reed at 225-683-5848.

The field day is cosponsored by the LSU AgCenter Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station, Quality Deer Management Association-South Louisiana Branch and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Directions from Baton Rouge: Take La. Highway 67 (Plank Road) 25 miles north toward Clinton, take right on Idlewild Road, then two miles to entrance of the station on the left.
