BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter is offering a prescribed burning workshop with burner certification at the LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station Dec. 11-13.
The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. each day, said LSU AgCenter area forestry agent Brian Chandler.
“The workshop will provide essential information for conducting prescribed burns safely and legally in your timberlands,” Chandler said. “Instructors will be from the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.”
Topics on the first two days will include fuels, fire behavior, fire weather, fire ecology, burning techniques, smoke management, fire lane establishment, burn planning and more. A field exercise with a prescribed fire will be held on the second day of the training, he said.
The final day will cover Louisiana’s Certified Prescribed Burner program. Attending the class, passing an exam and attending the burning demonstration are required for certification.
Registration is $100 per person before Nov. 29 and $150 after that. The registration fee covers lunches, refreshments, handouts and supplies, Chandler said.
The workshop will be limited to the first 40 applicants. For more information and the registration form, contact Chandler at 225-683-3101, or bchandler@agcenter.lsu.edu.
