Winners named at 4-H Commodity Ambassador state contests

BATON ROUGE, La. – Five 2013 state 4-H Commodity Ambassador contests named 15 winners on Tuesday, April 16, on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. In all, 80 4-H’ers from across the state competed in the chicken, egg, seafood, sugar and turkey ambassador contests.

The 4‑H Commodity Ambassador Program is designed for the education and enhancement of 4‑H Club members, according to Theresia Lavergne, LSU AgCenter poultry specialist. The program provides an opportunity for 4‑H’ers to increase their knowledge of agricultural commodities and improve their written and verbal communication skills.

The 2013 state winners are:

Chicken Ambassador

Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Martel Papillion, Allen Parish

Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Clay Zaunbrecher, Vermilion Parish

Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Catherine Blanchard, St. Martin Parish

Egg Ambassador

Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Laurel Chiasson, Lafourche Parish

Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Kadan Guillory, Allen Parish

Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Viki-Dawn Landry, Ascension Parish

Seafood Ambassador

Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Mckinzey Fowler, Ascension Parish

Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Matthew Landry, Ascension Parish

Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Skyler Bourque, Jefferson Davis Parish

Sugar Ambassador

Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Catherine Romaine, Vermilion Parish

Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Bret Lee, Vermilion Parish

Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Shawn Fox, Ascension Parish

Turkey Ambassador

Division I (fourth- to sixth-graders) – Gabrielle Fontenot, Evangeline Parish

Division II (seventh- to ninth-graders) – Joel Thompson, Lafayette Parish

Division III (10th- to 12th-graders) – Kyrie Collins, Vermilion Parish

The winners in Divisions I and II each received a $50 award.

The winners in Division III of the chicken, egg, and turkey contests receive a trip to represent Louisiana at the National 4-H Poultry & Egg Conference in Louisville, Ky., in November.

The winners in Division III of the seafood and sugar contests receive a 4-H educational trip in July.

The 4-H Commodity Ambassador programs are sponsored by the Louisiana Poultry Federation, the Louisiana Egg Commission, the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, the American Society of Sugarcane Technologists and the Louisiana 4-H Foundation.
