Prescribed burning workshop for forests set for April 3-5 in Clinton

News Release Distributed 03/06/13

CLINTON, La. – The LSU AgCenter is offering a prescribed burning workshop with burner certification for timber landowners on April 3-5 at the Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station. The workshop will begin 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. each day.

“This workshop will provide essential information for conducting prescribed burns safely and legally on your timberlands,” said LSU AgCenter area extension forester Brian Chandler. “Instructors will be from the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.”

Topics on the first two days will include fuels, fire behavior, fire weather, fire ecology, burning techniques, smoke management, fire lane establishment, burn planning and more. A field exercise with a prescribed fire will be held on the second day, Chandler said.

The third day will cover Louisiana’s Certified Prescribed Burner Program. Attending the class, passing an exam and participating in the burning exercise are required for certification.

Registration is $100 per person before March 22 and $150 after that date. The registration fee covers lunches, refreshments, handouts and supplies.

The workshop will be limited to the first 30 people who apply. For more information and a registration form, contact Chandler at 225-683-3101 or by email.

The Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station is located at 4419 Idlewild Rd. in Clinton, La.
