The LSU AgCenter’s 31st Annual Sugarcane Field Day will be held July 17 at the Sugar Research Station near St. Gabriel, beginning with registration at 8:00 a.m.
Field tours beginning at 9 a.m. will feature reports from LSU AgCenter scientists on their current research, which will include:
– Conventional versus soybean fallow programs, including soybean production and economics.
– A review of current sugarcane varieties as well as those in the research pipeline.
– Fungicides and orange rust.
– Handling sugarcane residue after clipping.
Guest speakers following the field tour will include Dr. Mike Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, a representative from American Sugar Cane League and comments from AgCenter administrators. In addition, the program will feature a presentation on sugarcane labor issues by Randy Bracy of Bracy’s Nursery in Amite, La.
The Sugar Research Station is located on La. Highway 30, 11 miles south of LSU Tiger Stadium or nine miles north of Gonzales.
