Wildlife field day set for March 16 in Clinton

News Release Distributed 02/19/13

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU AgCenter Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station near Clinton will hold a wildlife field day on Sat., March 16.

The event will focus on the management of white-tailed deer and feral hog populations, according to Don Reed, LSU AgCenter forestry specialist at the station.

“Presentations will cover a variety of topics including deer hunting regulations, along with consequences resulting from reported epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) outbreaks during this past season,” Reed said. EHD is an acute, infectious and often fatal disease of some wild ruminants.

Two field demonstrations will focus on techniques for controlling feral hogs using snaring devices triggered by leg-hold traps along with the use of conventional snares and cage traps.

“LSU AgCenter butchers will demonstrate proper techniques for processing feral swine carcasses,” Reed said. “This will assist landowners in getting the most value and enjoyment from their catches.”

The program will end at noon with a lunch provided in the registration fee. Preregistration is $30 if paid by March 11. Registration fees paid after this date will be $40. Checks should be made payable to QMDA. Registration can be completed by telephone and with a credit card by calling Tammy Bosch at 225-291-7500.

Further information about the field day is available from Reed at 225-683-5848.

The field day is cosponsored by the LSU AgCenter, Quality Deer Management Association, South Louisiana Branch and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Directions to the station from Baton Rouge: Take La. Highway 67 (Plank Rd.) 25 miles north toward Clinton, turn right on Idlewild Rd, then two miles to the station entrance on the left.
