Sustainable gardening highlight of LaHouse Garden Day

News Release Distributed 03/21/12

The LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse-Home and Landscape Resource Center is sponsoring a Spring Garden Day on Friday, April 20, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Gardening presentations and exhibits at LaHouse will provide home gardeners with information, ideas and inspiration on a variety of sustainable gardening topics, said Kyle Huffstickler, LaHouse landscape coordinator.

LSU AgCenter specialists and local experts will discuss how to plan and grow a sustainable backyard garden full of vegetables, herbs and flowers, he said.

Topics for the event will include native plants, spring and summer vegetable gardening, controlling weeds in the landscape, Louisiana Super Plants, flower arranging using plants from the garden, plant propagation, herb gardening and attracting butterflies.

“There will be plants for sale, which will include bedding plants, herbs, olive trees and Louisiana Super Plants,” Huffstickler said. “Participants are also encouraged to tour the sustainable gardens while they are here.”

Admission is free to the event, with participants receiving jambalaya and refreshments at noon.

LaHouse is located at 2858 Gourrier Avenue, Baton Rouge (near the intersection of Nicholson Drive and Burbank Drive).

For more information on LaHouse or the Spring Garden Day, contact Huffstickler at 225-578-7913.
