News Release Distributed 03/20/12
A joint field day for forest landowners in East Baton Rouge and the Feliciana parishes is scheduled for Friday, March 30, in Zachary.
The field day will be held at the property of Dr. Robert Lank on Highway 64 west of Zachary.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the program starts at 9:30 a.m.
The timber market has been very slow due to the poor housing market, according to LSU AgCenter extension forester Brian Chandler.
“During the field day, we will discuss the pine straw market, look at a pine straw harvesting operation and see the results of a first thinning,” he said.
Pine straw is in high demand for landscaping, Chandler said. It can be another source of income for forest landowners.
Lunch will be provided after the program.
The location is on the north side of Highway 64, 2.3 miles west of Highway 964 or 1.1 miles east of Highway 61. Look for a large sign that says “Pine Straw Bales” at the gate and also look for the “Forestry Field Day” signs that will be posted.
Call the LSU AgCenter’s East Feliciana Extension office at 225-683-3101 by March 23 if you plan to attend.
The field day is an educational program of the LSU AgCenter and is supported by the Feliciana and Red Stick forestry associations.
