Hill Farm field day to feature beef, forestry tours Oct. 9

LSU AgCenter faculty will present information ranging from beef cattle management to pruning timber at the 2012 Hill Farm Field Day on Tues., Oct. 9, near Homer.

The field day will begin with registration at 9 a.m. with field tours starting at 9:30, according to LSU AgCenter forestry professor Michael Blazier.

“The topics to be discussed by LSU AgCenter research and extension faculty during the general station field tour include forage management, beef cattle research, the poultry demonstration house project, and planting and thinning strategies for loblolly pine,” Blazier said.

Concurrent afternoon tours of forestry and beef research projects on the station will follow lunch.

The beef cattle tour from 1-3 p.m. will include:

– Beef industry updates.
– Parasite control in stocker cattle.
– Pre-weaning strategies, creep grazing.
– Weaning and post-weaning strategies.
– Utilizing reproductive technologies.
– Carcass evaluation demonstration.
– Feed efficiency in lactating cows.

The forest management tour from 1-4 p.m. will cover:

– Silvopasture: Raising cattle and trees.
– Financial performance of pine planting densities and seedling stock type.
– Pruning and “sudden sawlogs”: Viable for Private Landowners?
– Fall planting vs. winter planting and bareroot vs. container seedlings.
– Forest management strategies to respond to emerging biofuels markets.
