Master Gardener Mother’s Day plant sale at Burden May 12

 News Release Distributed 04/20/12

East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners will hold their annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale May 12 at LSU AgCenter’s Burden Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Master Gardeners have been working all year to provide the public with more than 150 varieties of plants, according to Master Gardener Donna Montgomery.

The sale will feature easy-care roses, angelonias, coleus, cacti and succulents, herbs, vines, hanging baskets, angel trumpets, morning glory bushes, daylillies, fruit trees, blueberries and much more.

“Visitors can choose a hanging basket for a plant lover or an herb pot for the cook in the family, Montgomery said.

This year’s sale will include many of the LSU AgCenter’s Super Plants including the spring 2012 selections Senorita Rosalita cleome, BabyWing begonia and Penny Mac hydrangea. Another unusual plant is Angel Earrings cascading fuschia, which is heat-tolerant.

In addition to the large variety of plants, Master Gardeners will be available to help with selections and give advice on planting. At the plant health clinic, experts will be available to help with problems. In addition, there will be children’s gardening activities.

Montgomery suggests bringing a wagon along with cash or checkbook; credit cards will not be accepted.

Funds from the sale go to educational activities for the community, such as plant health clinics, school gardens, educational classes, children’s programs and projects at Burden Center.

Master Gardeners are LSU AgCenter volunteers who receive training and resources and in return volunteer their time to educate the gardening public.

Anyone with a willingness to learn and a desire to help others can become a Master Gardener. Interested individuals can contact their local extension office for times and dates of the next class.
